I have done some pretty unique weddings over the years, but the day I met Stephanie and Joseph at The 1909 in Topanga, I knew this was going to be one of the most interesting and different weddings I have ever done. They were planning a very intimate gathering for their closest friends and family. Their guest list would top out at 35 people. No bridal party, no toasts, and almost no formalities. They just wanted great music, a great party, and most importantly, for the night to be as chill as they are and not at all ceremonial. They wanted their rustic wedding to be a celebration and one they would want to attend as much as host. They even decided to walk each other down the aisle for their ceremony.
After the ceremony and a group photo taken by their wonderful photographer Kinsey Mhire, the guests ventured over to the cocktail hour while Stephanie, Joseph, and Kinsey ran off to take some photos in the most interesting, woodsy settings available. The guests enjoyed Moscow Mules and getting their picture taken in a repurposed VW Bus.
Once Stephanie and Joseph were back, it was time to feed everyone. Instead of round or even separate tables, Stephanie and Joseph opted for one large square table so everyone got to sit at the “Head Table.” They thanked their guests for coming and a three-course meal was served. Once everyone was satisfied, it was time for the next step (or several steps rather), trot all the way up to the top story of The 1909 or “The Party Room” as I liked to call it.
Once all the guests were upstairs, Stephanie and Joseph did a Grand Entrance through the double doors and right into their first dance. Stephanie LOVES music and dancing and gave me one of the most interesting playlists I have seen in quite sometime. I really enjoy weddings where the request list is out of my normal comfort zone. I was challenged to mix songs I usually don’t get a chance to play. (I’ll be honest…a few I’ve never even heard of too!) Even though the guest count was low, the dance floor energy was high all night. With only a brief pause to cut their wedding cake, the guests kept the dance floor hoppin’ all night until it was time to say goodbye. This was a wedding I won’t soon forget.
