I received a call a couple months ago from my dear friend and event planner, Jessie Ball from Every Night’s A Ball. She was working with a new Non-Profit group called LA Family Housing and wanted to know if I could help her out. LA Family Housing was working with Sit ‘n Sleep and Tempur-Pedic to provide mattresses to the veterans at Bridge Housing.
On this unusually warm November morning, the day before Veterans Day, I pumped the Classic Rock and Patriotic Music as 200+ veterans, family members, volunteers, and special guests arrived to participate in the festivities. First, Stephanie Klasky-Gamer, President and CEO of LAFH, took the stage. She thanked everyone and told those gathered about the difficulties and costs in transitioning homeless families back into apartments. With the incredibly generous donation of mattresses, many of those who recently made that transition would be getting a great sleep tonight and from now on. Stephanie then thanked and introduced Larry Miller, President and CEO of Sit ‘n Sleep, as well as Steve Rusing, Senior Vice President of Tempur-Pedic, for their remarks. Larry Miller spoke about the importance of a great night’s sleep and how he was honored to have been asked to donate to these veterans and their families. He called his friend and partner Steve to get involved, and together they were able to donate 2000 mattresses to LA Family Housing.
After the short program, everyone in attendance was treated to a very patriotic BBQ Luncheon of hot dogs, hamburgers, and an American Flag cupcake display. As everyone ate, grooved to the music, and connected with each other, we drew raffle tickets and gave away some hats, shirts, and workbags. I was so proud to have been able to lend my own type of assistance for such a worthy cause, and I hope I have a chance to work with these wonderful people again.
