Like Alanis Morissette said in her song Ironic, “It’s like rain on your wedding day.” Well, there was nothing ironic, paradoxical, or cynical about the love Lisa and Tom have for each other, and absolutely nothing was going to stop their wedding day from happening. Let me back up for a moment. Lisa and Tom met each other in the 3rd grade. Over 40 years later and with 4 states between them, Lisa and Tom reconnected through the magic of Facebook because of a class photo someone had posted online. After 4 years of long distance romance and finally Lisa moving to Texas to be with her beaux, these two tied the knot with the help of Rev. Barbara Laughray, who performed a beautiful ceremony, and the flexibility of the staff at Sand Canyon Country Club, who moved the ceremony from the usual open air patio to the covered patio with less than a day’s notice.
Lisa and Tom wanted a wedding where everyone had a great time. They also wanted to work with folks who they knew and trusted. Lisa’s daughter’s good friend Megan helped them out by coordinating all the details before and during the day. Their photographer, Jess, was a friend of the family. Even I knew Lisa and her daughter from a wedding I did several years ago. (Yes, I DJ’d Lisa’s daughter’s wedding before I DJ’d hers!) With so many people in their corner, they accomplished their fun and stress-free wedding. Plus the warmth these two were giving off defeated the cold weather.
Two wonderful moments stood out to me. The first was during Lisa’s dance with her dad, when her son, Kevin, cut in to dance with his mom. The second was during the Married Couples’ dance. As I found out who had been married 20, 25, 30, 25, 40, and eventually 47 years, the couple with their hand still up was Lisa’s God Parents. Lisa was the flower girl at their wedding 47 years ago!!! (She even presented them with a bottle of wine to celebrate!)
As the night grew to a close, there were still a solid group of partygoers there to finish out the evening. Lisa and Tom shared one last dance with all of their friends and family members surrounding them. After a few more songs, we turned the volume down and put on some classic rock for everyone to just chill out to. It was the perfect ending to an amazing day.
