A few months after meeting this incredible couple, I received an unexpected phone call from Erin and John. They remembered me mentioning that I was an Ordained Minister in our initial meeting, and they asked me if I would meet with them again to discuss possibly officiating their wedding in addition to MCing and Djing. I love performing weddings, so I graciously accepted. We met again and talked about what their vision was for their simple, non-denominational ceremony. It sounded like another perfect fit, and we continued to meet up over the next year to not only plan out the wedding reception but the ceremony as well.
Initially, Erin and John were going to have their wedding at a different location. However, due to the Sand Fire in July and some unforeseen renovations at their venue 11 days before the wedding, Erin and John called me up and asked if I could meet them at the Angeles National Golf Club to discuss possibly changing their wedding and reception location. I met them, along with the banquet manager Cody (who practically jumped through flaming hoops to give Erin and John exactly what they needed…never once saying “no” to any requests any of us could think of). We made a plan to move everything over to the new location, and Erin and John got busy making phone calls to everyone on their guest list, while myself, their coordinator extraordinaire Belinda Dexter, and the amazing staff at Angeles National Golf Club, made the final preparations and changes necessary to move venues at the last minute. By Friday that week when we did the rehearsal dinner, everything was set and ready to go for the wedding now only eight days away.
The wedding day had finally arrived and Erin, John, and their entire bridal party looking fantastic and ready to get these two married. As John and I walked toward the ceremony site, he jokingly asked me if we should be holding hands. As we all stood in anticipation, and the music changed, our beautiful bride Erin appeared and was escorted down the aisle by her son Ryan, who perfectly performed his duties in giving his mom away. They said their “I Do’s,” and we were off to the cocktail hour and reception.
As we brought in the bridal party, and they lined up to greet the newlyweds, Erin and John entered to a thunderous applause. John took the microphone and thanked his guests…then turned to me and said “What do you say Dave, can I dance with my wife?” Only one word came to mind as Erin and John danced and sang Blake Shelton’s “Mine Would Be You” to each other…Adorable! The guests were then treated to a delicious dinner prepared and served by a very friendly staff.
We got everyone out on the dance floor and my hunch was right…this was a dancing crowd! We shifted from Disco to Top-40, to Funk, to 80s…you name it, they danced to it. However, I was taken quite aback when the requests for Gangsta Rap started coming in from multiple guests. I decided to hit them with my patented East Coast/West Coast 90s Hip-Hop set and peppered in a whole lot of Old School 80s, 90s, and 2000s tunes as well. Seeing the crowd not only dance but sing along absolutely made my great evening even better. It was almost too soon when we decided to wrap up the festivities with my famous Circle of Love. I become friends with almost all of my clients, but when I am blessed enough to really get to know such great people as Erin and John, it reminds me just how much I love my job!
