Sometimes you hear a couple’s story that just defies the odds. Such was the case with Amy and Andrew. Meeting each other at a crossroads in their lives, these two were told not to get involved with each other, because it would never last. Two years later, I was sitting down with Amy, Andrew, and their bulldog Matilda listening to their story and helping them plan the perfect evening. They chose a venue as unique as the two of them: The Palos Verdes Art Center. The guests were first ushered into the gallery, where they enjoyed cocktails and the art on display throughout the museum. When it was time for the party, they made their way up to the Event Room, which was classically decorated in black, white, and gold. Amy and Andrew made their Grand Entrance, thanked their guests (especially Amy’s sister Christina who helped them plan out every little detail from the beginning), and danced for the first time as husband and wife.
What was most important for Amy and Andrew were their guests. They wanted them to feel appreciated, because the two of them would not be where they were without everyone in that room. They wanted a fun and stress-free evening that moved along smoothly. As wonderfully as Christina set them up for success, it was up to the fantastic team them assembled to pull off their vision. Jane from the Art Center was there all evening ensuring every detail was perfect. Their photographer Jason from Mood Photography was like a ninja, never in the way but always there with his camera ready. My job was to keep things moving along and bring the fun! And fun was had by everyone once the dance floor was opened up. I kept hearing from the guests that they have never seen a DJ get EVERYONE out on the dance floor like I did. Young, old, and everyone in between had a blast.
One challenge we faced was the short time period we had for their reception. In just over four hours, the guests had a cocktail hour, a delicious “family style” dinner, cake, dessert, and lots of time for dancing. Amy and Andrew didn’t feel rushed at all and used the time in between courses to casually visit all of their tables and spend time talking with each guest. I usually see brides and grooms stressing to get through everything even in a five or six hour reception, but Amy and Andrew were cool, calm, and collected all night. They told me they weren’t really sure how a wedding was supposed to go. I’d say they nailed it. When it was time for Amy and Andrew to catch their limo and head out, I asked everyone to come out to the dance floor one last time so they could say a proper goodbye. Amy and Andrew danced one last time with all of their remaining guests surrounding them, then they went around and hugged everyone. As they climbed into their limo, they told me they had the time of their life. I couldn’t help myself, and I jumped in the limo with them to grab one last Selfie before wishing them luck and sending them on their way to write the next chapter of their love story.
